The Psychic Paper

21 Aug

When I first watched Doctor Who, I kept on seeing him handing over this small business card like object to anyone and everyone when he needed to prove to them he belonged somewhere.  I had absolutely no idea how everyone believed that he belonged, but I assumed there was a simple explanation and of course…there was.  This small business card that the doctor totes around is called psychic paper and it lets him to do a lot of things, such as proving his credentials.

The 3 uses of Psychic Paper:

The first use is letting people to see whatever they want to see.  This works well when Doctor Who travels to a world he’s never been to before and needs to get into somewhere safe. In Paradox Lost, the Doctor flashes his psychic paper to get access to a archaeological dig.  The funny thing is that the doctor doesn’t seem to know what the paper tells people often because he’ll often need confirmation of his identity.  In Paradox Lost, its only when the archaeologist he presented the paper to asks him ‘why does the conservation board need to be here?’ that he realizes what the psychic paper chose to reveal him as.

The second use of psychic paper is using it just like a ticket.  This works for security card readers, transportation (such as buses, trains, etc.)

The final use of the psychic paper is receiving and sending messages.  Riversong sometimes uses the psychic paper to send messages to the doctor telepathically when she needs help.

Limitations of Psychic Paper:

While the psychic paper can be used on the untrained, those who have psychic training (such as torchwood people) won’t be fooled by it.  Also, certain very bright minds (such as Shakespeare) will not be fooled by the psychic paper.
